Diagnosing the problem
Usually you hear it — a loud bang from the garage, often when nobody's near the door. After that the opener will strain, hum, or lift the door a few inches and stop. Look at the spring above the door: a broken torsion spring has a visible gap in the coil, like someone cut a slice out of it. The other tell is weight. A door with a working spring is fairly easy to lift by hand. A door with a broken one feels like it's bolted down.
The most common causes are a broken spring, a snapped cable, or the door being off track — all of which are visible if you look at the hardware. If the opener motor runs but nothing moves, the trolley may have been disconnected by the emergency release cord, or the opener's gear may have stripped. If nothing happens at all, check that the unit still has power and that the wall button works, since remotes and keypads fail separately from the opener itself.
Nine times out of ten it's the safety sensors. Those are the two small photo eyes mounted near the floor on each side of the opening. If something is in the beam, if one got bumped out of alignment, or if bright sunlight is hitting one directly, the opener refuses to close and usually blinks its light at you. Clean the lenses, make sure both indicator lights are steady, and check that nothing is in the path. If the door closes partway and reverses instead, that's more likely the opener's travel or force settings, or something binding in the tracks.
Most often a cable let go, a roller failed, or something struck the door — backing into it is the classic one. Loose track brackets and a door that was already out of balance both make it more likely. Whatever the cause, don't run the opener to try to straighten it out. Forcing a door that's off track bends the track further and can tear hinges out of the sections.
The sound is a decent clue. Rattling and wobble usually means worn rollers or loose hardware. A rhythmic squeal often points to dry bearings or hinges. Grinding from the motor housing suggests the opener's gear. A single loud bang is almost always a spring. And a scraping noise at the same spot every cycle points to a bent track or a roller that's binding.
Safety note: garage door springs and cables hold a lot of stored energy, even with the door closed. If something has broken, leave it alone and call rather than trying to work on it yourself.
What to do
Stop using the opener — running it against a jammed or unbalanced door tends to turn a small repair into a bigger one. If the door is stuck open and you need to secure the garage, and only if the door is not hanging crooked or clearly off track, you can pull the emergency release cord and move the door by hand. If a spring is broken, don't: the door is extremely heavy without it. Then call us and describe what you saw and heard.
We'd strongly recommend not. Garage door springs hold a great deal of stored energy even when the door is closed, and releasing that tension without the correct winding bars is genuinely dangerous. It also requires the right spring for your specific door weight and height — the wrong one leaves the door out of balance and wears out the opener. This is the job to hand off.

Repairs & replacement
It depends on what's wrong and how old the door is. Springs, cables, rollers and openers are wear items — replacing those on an otherwise sound door is normally the right call. Replacement makes more sense when the door itself is failing: rot along the bottom section, rust through the steel, multiple damaged panels, or sections that are no longer manufactured. When you ask us, we'll give you both numbers so you can decide rather than guess.
Often, yes. Garage doors are built in sections, so a single damaged one can be swapped without replacing the whole door — as long as a matching section is still made for that model. On older doors that's not always possible, and even when it is, years of sun exposure mean a new section may not match the color of the rest. We'll identify your door and tell you honestly which situation you're in before anything gets ordered.
Gears, remotes, sensors and circuit boards are all repairable, and on a unit that's otherwise in good shape a repair is usually the sensible option. Replacement starts making sense when the unit is old enough that parts are hard to find, when it predates safety sensors entirely, or when it's failed repeatedly. Noise is also a fair reason on its own — a modern belt drive is far quieter than an old chain drive, which matters if there's a bedroom over the garage.
Maintenance
Once a year is a reasonable rhythm for a door that gets daily use, and it's a good habit to test the safety reverse yourself every month or so. Between visits, the useful thing you can do is pay attention: a door getting louder, moving less smoothly, or feeling heavier by hand is telling you something is wearing.
Springs are rated in cycles rather than years — one cycle being one open and one close. How long that translates to depends entirely on how much you use the door. A household that opens the door six times a day will go through springs considerably faster than one that opens it twice. Age, rust and coastal air all shorten that life too. If your springs are original to an older door and you use it daily, it's fair to assume they're getting on.
